美国传统大词典上对“副词”-“adverb”的解释：
An adverb is a part of speech comprising a class of words that modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
例如：I push the door very hard.
在这个句子中very和hard都是副词.hard是修饰push这个动作的副词；而very则是修饰hard这个副词的副词.
当副词修饰副词时,有三种情况.
1、前一个副词一般为“程度副词”,后一个往往是描述性副词（例如：very/pretty/quite/rather）.

程度副词：
程度副词的特点程度副词用于表示程度,常见的有almost,fairly, pretty, rather, quite, very, much, too, greatly, nearly, half, highly, awfully,

(1)exactly程度副词主要用于修饰形容词和副词,有的还可修饰比较级(如much, rather 等)和最高级(如quite, much, almost 等).如：Houses are much
more expensive these days. 如今的房价贵多了.

(说明:quite 有时也修饰比较级,但只用于quite better(身体康复)这一表达.)
(2) 有的程度副词(如quite, rather, almost等)可修饰动词,但有的(如fairly, pretty, very等fairly, pretty, 则不能修饰动词.如：I quite agree with
you. 我完全同意你的意见.(不用fairly, pretty, very)We rather like the film. 我们很喜欢这部电影.(不用fairly, pretty, very)
(3) 个别的程度副词(主要是quite和rather)还可修饰名词(注意词序).如：It’s quite [rather] a good idea. / It’s a quite [rather] good idea. 那
可真是个好主意.
若此结构中没有形容词,则 quite 和 rather 则只能放在冠词之前.如：It was quite [rather] a success. 那事相当成功.
2、副词重叠：两个副词之间没有任何关系,只是增强语气.
例如：very very(相当于汉语中“非常非常……,太,太……”的语气句)
3、固定用法：这里两个词组不能拆开,只是作为一个短语适用
例如：You were rude to say that to your father just now.
just now不是just修饰now的问题,而是一个固定用法,表示“刚刚”.
almost overnight,副词修饰副词,表示“几乎一整夜”.
